Memories As We Were

Those of you who have viewed my images when I was featured on the Moriarty site and later on the Vintage Seduction site will find some duplication at first.

I am starting from scratch on my own site now. Of course new viewers will not have seen my material before. All my recreations are based on my own experience and participation in the scenarios from 1944 to 1970.

I attempt to be as accurate as possible based on my memory. I hope you enjoy the images and surely they will bring back memories for some of you.

As far as I can determine the first skirt blowing began late in the 1800's, around 1897 in Pennsylvania, probably in or near Philadelphia. Of course in those days a revealed ankle was a very erotic episode. The idea took on and spread to other amusement parks.

There has been a lot of discussion as to why a blown up skirt was more erotic than strippers in Burlesque shows. I will not discuss the matter further here.

George Tilyou was a very perceptive entrepreneur discerning what people enjoyed. He adopted the idea for his Coney Island amusement park including several improvements. His success with the concept contributed in large part to popularity and the spread of this kind of exhibitionism to all of the U.S., Europe and England. He constructed a completely enclosed pavilion entitled “The Funny Place”. When it rained the Coney Island visitors flocked to his pavilion. In it were many types of rides including the Pantomime Stage, often referred to as “Blow Hole Theater” or “The Insanitarium”.

One problem was to get female patrons to stand over the air jets to reveal their charms. Surrounding the pavilion Mr. Tilyou had constructed a "Steeple Chase" ride with wooden horses on which a couple could ride, girl in front, boy holding her from the back. There was only one exit to this extremely popular ride which led to the air jet stage, thus forcing all riders on to the stage, providing plenty of subjects.

The routine was simple. The couple was greeted by a dwarf clown and a full size "Farmer" clown. Under the guise of assistance the dwarf clown gabbed the girl by her left hand, and the "Farmer" clown her right hand, leading her over the air jets but preventing her from holding down her skirt as an operator in a howdah on a fake elephant turned on the air jets to send her skirt waist high. When the subject was particularly attractive they would prolong the exposure for everyone’s enjoyment. Below the stage were seats for viewers to watch the show which always filled to capacity.

Steeple Chase also had another advantage in that it was located close to the Coney Island beaches. After sunning women would dress after removing their swim suits. For some reason or another occasionally some would leave their panties off and continue to enjoy rides including Steeple Chase. Of course when these ladies got over the air jets their display of bare charms would bring down the house of viewers, and the clowns would prolong the display for many minutes. The audience would toss coins to the clowns for putting on a good show. The embarrassment of the victims only added to the erotic enjoyment. It also provided exhibitionistic couples a venue to safely indulge their fetish. I remember one couple dressed beautifully, she in a full white dress, he in evening clothes. They would go through often, she without her panties, wearing only her nylons and garter belt. Their behavior clearly gave away that they were enjoying "putting on a naughty show".

I visited Steeple Chase dozens of times with girlfriends and wives between 1944 and 1961, when Steeple Chase finally closed.
